Detecting weapons hidden under persons’ clothing is highly important to safeguard the general public and public assets. Of course, manual screening procedures are carried out to detect weapons like guns, knives and explosives in controlled areas such as sensitive buildings, airports and others. But, some other technique to detect the concealed weapons is needed as it is not possible to manually check everyone in a crowded region. Hence, here comes the need for a scanning technique that can detect the presence of weapons accurately.

Here come the imaging techniques that are a combination of sensor technologies and processing in resolving the issue pertaining to detection of concealed weapons. The improvements in MMW sensor technology has resulted in MMW cameras that are used along with IR or EO cameras.
By combining the data of both MWV camera image and infrared IR sensor or electro-optical EO image, the complete information can be obtained accurately. This information will then help in concealed weapon detection.
Though the process is accurate, there are challenges like detecting from a distance and in forgoing through portable multi-sensor instruments. Such concealed weapon detection (CWD) systems are becoming an important aspect in the area of law and enforcement and is a critical technology used in dealing with terrorism.
