Wavelet Based Image Compression

A notable list of major projects for ECE students involves image compression which is a process that helps to compress an image which reduces the redundancy and irrelevance of an image and makes them to transmit or store in an efficient form. In order to compress an image there are various flexible hardware implementations which helps in image processing, coding, decoding and other complicated processes and one such process is wavelet based image compression. In these type of electronics projects for students, lifting based 2D Fourier Discrete Wavelet Transform(FDWT) processing image compression algorithms are used to build up a high quality of JPEG 2000 codec and also to decompose the image coefficients of input image.

As this image compression technique is wavelet-based, the hardware and software acceleration of DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) are observed and compared for signal processing applications. This technique is to be implemented in a hardware description language, simulation is done in MATLAB. The functionality of the developing module is verified with the software simulation of compressed image and the aim of undergoing FDWT image compression algorithms is to reduce the complexity, enhance its performance and also place them in a reconfigurable Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) platform for implementing Very Large Scale Integration(VLSI). The simulation results conclude that less memory space is needed for the lifting scheme of FDWT processor and the entire image compression process runs at clock frequency of 215MHz and helps in all real-time applications. Though these image compression algorithms still meet out its initial stage, taking these topics as final year projects for electronics engineering students really benefit them to move to an advanced stage.
